Motivation

I want to motivate you!  I say motivate but some people don’t know what I’m talking about.  Let me tell this story to help you to understand the meaning.

A West Texas Rancher and Oil Man gave a coming-out party for his daughter.  She was just about old enough to date … about 32 years old.  He invited all the available bachelors from 100 miles around and put on a great feast.  During the proceedings, he called the young men out back to the pool to motivate them.

He said, Men, notice that I have my Olympic size swimming pool well stocked with alligators and water moccasins.  For the first young man that is a swim to the other side of the pool, I will give one of three things.  1. A million dollars, or 2. 10,000 acres of my lush ranchland including the oil rights and stocked with cattle, or 3. The hand of my beautiful daughter in marriage.

No sooner were the words out of his mouth, there was a splash in the pool and no sooner was the splash heard and one of the young men came clawing and scratching his way out on the other side.  They all ran excitedly around to the very wet man.

The Rancher said, Young man, you have performed quite a fete tonight.  I am sure that had we had an official timer, you would have broken all the records.  But the point is that you have won the chance to choose one of the three options that I offered.  So, what will it be, the 1 million dollars?

The young man stood there dripping with water and a determined look on his face and said, No!

The Rancher asked, Then will it be the 10,000 acres with cattle and oil rights?

The young man stood there dripping with water and a determined look on his face and said, No!

The elated Rancher said, Then it must be the hand of my beautiful daughter in marriage!

The young man stood there dripping with water and a determined look on his face and said, Not on your life!

The disturbed Rancher asked, Then what do you want, Boy?

The young man stood there dripping with water and a determined look on face said, I’d like the name of the dude who pushed me in the pool!

Now, that illustrates Motivation.  I do want to motivate you to serve the Lord with all your heart.  But the truth of the matter is that unless God the Spirit does something in your heart, you will not be motivated to do anything for the Lord.
